Adaptive Dog Training
What is Adaptive Dog Training?
As most of us know, the benefits of having a dog are immeasurable - companionship, social connections, something to nurture and take care of, security, and even lowering blood pressure just to name a few.
Did you know that there are thousands of Emergency Room visits every year related to dog injuries? And it is not just dog bites, but dislocations, lacerations, rope burns, broken bones, concussions, traumatic brain injuries and the list goes on. Many of the victims are among the elderly or disabled. Just one accidental dog injury can be life altering.
In order to live safely with our canine companions there are ways to minimize the hazards. Adaptive Dog Training can be helpful in adapting training to an owner’s new environment or health challenges. Here are a few things I help owners consider:
*Breed Selection
*Temperament testing
*Re-training the dog you already have and love
*Basic Obedience - Canine Good Citizen certification
*Adaptive Training techniques for specific needs such as navigating steps safely, controlled behavior at the door, elevating food / water for easier access, elevating dog for grooming and leashing, toy and bedding choices
*Using local services - mobile vets, mobile groomers, dog walkers, etc.
Just because life changes, doesn’t always mean we cannot continue to enjoy the love and companionship a dog can provide!
